Hazleton pair garner National, Conference Player of the Week honors
HAZLETON, Pa. -- A pair of Penn State Hazleton student-athletes have garnered recognition for their athletic performance over the past week. Ty Morzilla (Berwick, Pa.) was named the United States Collegiate Athletic Association and the Penn State University Athletic Conference Player of the Week for Men's Golf, while Steven Principe (Jim Thorpe, Pa.) earned PSUAC Player of the Week honors for Men's Soccer.
Morzilla earns his first ever player of the week honors during an outstanding fall season. The freshman has won four of the five events he has played, including his last two. He took medalist honors with a 5-over par 77 at the Penn State Wilkes-Barre Invitational at Irem Country Club on September 23, followed by a win at the Penn State Hazleton Invitational at Valley Country Club this past Monday. Morzilla has not finished worse than second in any event this year.
Principe earned the first player of the week honors of his career, netting a four-goal game against the University of Valley Forge on September 25. Overall, he finished with five goals as Hazleton went 2-1 during the week. Principe leads the Nittany Lions with eight goals this season, and also has an assist for 17 total points.
Morzilla is the first Penn State Hazleton student-athlete to be recognized as both a USCAA and PSUAC Player of the Week this year, and is the first golfer to ever do so. He looks to complete his season with a win at the PSUAC and USCAA Championships, held in conjunction October 12-14 at the Penn State Blue Course in State College, Pa.
Principe will lead the Nittany Lions charge for a PSUAC playoff berth this weekend as Hazleton hosts Penn State Brandywine on Saturday and Penn State Greater Allegheny on Sunday. Both games are scheduled to begin at 2:00 p.m.
