Trio of Nittany Lions earn PSUAC All-Conference honors
STATE COLLEGE, Pa. - The Pennsylvania State University Athletic Conference recently announced their 2014 Men's Soccer All-Conference Team, including three members of the Penn State Hazleton squad that finished the season 3-5-1 in the PSUAC and made the playoffs.
Freshman Steven Principe (Jim Thorpe, Pa.) and sophomores Logan Yacowatz (Sugarloaf, Pa.) and John Wasserman (Perkasie, Pa.) all received nods as PSUAC Second Team All-Conference honorees.
Principe led the Nittany Lions with 11 goals, good enough to finish in a tie for sixth in the PSUAC. His 23 total points were 13th in the conference, and Principe added three game-winning goals to his impressive opening season. Principe started all 16 games for Hazleton and was named a PSUAC Player of the Week the week of September 30.
Yacowatz turned in a solid sophomore campaign, leading the PSUAC in saves with 101, and finishing third in save percentage. His 2.26 goals against average was good for fourth in the conference, and was helped by two shutouts during the mid part of the season to lead Hazleton to 5-1-1 stretch. His performance during those seven games led to his PSUAC Goalkeeper of the Week award on October 7. Yacowatz spent the entire season in the net, starting every game and never missing a minute for the Nittany Lions.
Wasserman, a captain, spent much of his season on defense, but still tallied four goals for Hazleton, all coming on penalty kicks. He added two assists to finish with 10 total points, tied for third on the Nittany Lions. Wasserman provided steady play in the back for Hazleton, serving as one of the few upperclassmen with previous collegiate experience.
Hazleton finished 5-10-1 during the 2014 season, falling to Penn State New Kensington in the first round of the PSUAC playoffs.
