Emil Michael Hutnyan
Men's Basketball (1949-51)
After averaging less than two points as a freshman during a dismal 1949-50 season, which included a 4-11 record, Hutnyan came back as a sophomore in 1950-51 to average more than 20 points a game and lead the Hazleton Center to the PJCAA tournament semifinals.
Coach Syd Rudman called him the most improved player from one season to next he had ever seen. Hutnyan’s greatest moment came when he fired in a record 48 points in a 101-88 victory over Altoona Center in the 1950-51 season. That record stood for 28 years.
Hutnyan was the team’s leading scorer and second-leading rebounder in 1950-51, when Hazleton was 12-10. He is a graduate of Hazleton High School.
