Jim graduated from Hazleton High School in 1971 after a successful basketball career with the Mountaineers.
While playing for the Hazleton Campus, Jim established the career scoring record with 22.8 points per game average, which still stands today.
He was also listed twice in the all-time individual scoring averages. Jim averaged 24.3 points per game during the 1971-72 season, trailing record holder Erv Carter by just .2 points. Chapman finished his career with 22.6 points per game the following year.
