Stuaffer shuts down WIlliamson for Hazleton's first win of 2019

Media, Pa. - The Nittany Lion bats remained quiet on Tuesday afternoon when Hazleton traveled to the Williamson Free School of the Trades, but the Lions got a boost from sophomore Colin Stauffer (Hazleton, Pa.) who shut down the Mechanics for a 2-0 win. 

Stuaffer got the lead before ever taking the hill on Tuesday. Senior Charles Karchner (West Hazleton, Pa.) reached base on an error to lead off the game and quickly stole second base. Karchner took off for third and after reaching safely, the ball bound for left field allowing the senior to cross the plate and give the Lions a 1-0 head start. 

Hazleton would strand seven total runners in the second, third and fifth innings, but hang on to their slim advantage thanks to the efforts of Stauffer. Williamson had their chance to get on the board in the third frame until Stauffer and the defense closed the door. The Mechanics loaded the bases taking advantage of an error and two walks but with two outs, a line drive up the middle was snagged by Stauffer to end the threat. 

The Lions tacked on an insurance run in the top half of the sixth inning. Hazleton's second tally came on an infield hit by freshman Rafael Santos (Hazleton, Pa.) that brought in sophomoe Josh Malkemes (Mountain Top, Pa.) and with a 2-0 cushion, Stauffer shut the door on Williamson. The sophomore ace finished the game with complete game shutout, striking out seven while allowing just four walks and two hits on the day. 

Next up: Hazleton's matchup with Lebanon Valley College on Wednesday was postponed but the weather looks good for Hazleton's Thursday double-header. The Lions will take on Southern Maine Community College at the In The Net Sports Complex in Palmyra, Pa. First pitch slated for 1:00 p.m.
