Harper and Hoy lead charge at Valley Country Club
Conyngham, Pa. - Golf resumed in the Penn State University Athletic Conference on Monday with Hazleton's annual invitational at the Valley Country Club. Hazleton's top duo in sophomore's Jeremy Harper (Mountain Top, Pa.) and Colin Hoy (Harlysville, Pa.) battled the course for two solid scores that helped the Lions to a second place finish with Harper coming in as the tournament's medalist, his first win of the season.
Hoy started out with a birdie at the par five 17th hole and quickly settled into the round to go even par through his first nine holes played. Hoy stumbled midway through the round with three consecutive bogeys at holes eight, nine and ten but bounced back with four straight pars to maintain a three over round through 16 holes. Hoy would bogey his final two holes of the day but managed to keep big numbers off the card, turning in a solid five over par round with a 76.
Like Hoy, Harper would birdie his first hole of the day but a pair of double bogeys on his front nine spoiled an otherwise flawless effort. After bogeying the 10th hole, Harper cruised to the finish with seven straight pars and finishing his day with a birdie at the par four 18th to card a three over 74 and take home the day's top finish.
Next up: Hazleton will look to contend once more when they travel to State College, Pa. on Thursday for the PSUAC Invitational. Tee times set to begin at 10:00 a.m. on the Blue Course at University Park.
