Annual Award Named in Marty Mrozinski's Honor
Drifton, Pa. - Saturday, May 7th was a special evening at the Penn State University Athletic Conference Softball Championships with the announcement of the renaming of the PSUAC Softball Coach of the Year Award to honor late Hazleton coach Marty Mrozinski. The Marty Mrozinski Coach of the Year award was announced a day later, as Mrozinski's former assistant coach and now Penn State Hazleton head coach Rich Lipinski and Penn State Brandywine's Mark Caserta shared the honor.
Coaches, players and fans looked on as the PSUAC Commissioner John Fritz presented a plaque of the newly renamed award to Marty's wife Sharon, daughters Selena, Kelly, and Megan, along with Mrozinski's grandchildren. In addition to the award, a donation of 25 trees was made by the PSUAC to the Tahoe National Forest in California to serve as a living memorial to the longtime coach and mentor. The presentation concluded with Mrozinski's grandson Nick throwing out the first pitch prior to Penn State Hazleton's first game of the tournament against Penn State Beaver.
Mrozinski was named coach of the year four times over his illustrious career as head softball coach, accumulating two PSUAC championships and 236 career victories prior to his death in November of 2015. Mrozinski also coached women's basketball for four years at Penn State Hazleton.
