Lady Lions swept by St. Mary of the Woods
Titusville, Fl. – Hazleton faced defending United States Collegiate Athletic Association national champion St. Mary of the Woods College on Thursday morning, their final day of competition in Florida.
Hazleton was shut-out in the opening contest, falling to the Pomeroys 10-0 in five innings. The Lady Lions were held to just one hit by St. Mary of the Woods hurler Taylor Andrew while the Pomeroy offense used a six run first inning to take control of the game.
Freshman Mary Kate Penczkowski would toss a solid game for the Lady Lions in the second contest, allowing just three earned runs and stranding 10 St. Mary of the Woods base runners, but a bevy of errors would aid the Pomeroy cause. Trailing 3-0 through 4.5 innings, Hazleton freshman Breann Fetterman would drive in a run to cut the lead to just two scores, but three scores in the final two frames of action would serve as insurance for the Pomeroys who went on to take the final game by the score of 6-1.

Top Performers
Camille Ulery dominated the box score with a double and home run for the Pomeroys, notching five RBI and two runs score in a 2-for-3 effort at the dish. Hollie Jones went 2-for-3 with a run scored while Lisa Scott finished 1-for-2 with a run scored and an RBI.
Earning the win in the circle for St. Mary of the Woods was Taylor Andrew who tossed four innings of shut-out softball, allowing just one hit to Hazleton while striking out five batters.
Sophomore Samantha Varela was tagged with the loss in the circle, allowing 10 runs (seven earned) on 11 hits to the defending USCAA champions. Sophomore Vanessa Michael went 1-for-2 at the plate to lead Lady Lion hitters.
Bottom 1st
The Pomeroys used three hits, a walk and two Lady Lion fielding miscues to run up six runs in the first frame. With one run already scored and the bases loaded, Camille Ulery drives a double to the gap in left to push the score to 3-0. St. Mary of the Woods would tally three more scores on a pair of errors to take the early 6-0 lead over Hazleton.

Back to back singles for St. Mary of the Woods to lead off the inning leads to a three run blast by Camille Ulery. A hit batsman advances to third base after a steal and passed ball, then comes in to score on a sacrifice fly Lisa Scott to increase the Pomeroy advantage to 10-0.

Top Performers
St. Mary of the Woods was led by Kerri Schrock who went 2-for-2 at the plate with two RBI. Breanna Lange added three hits in four trips to the dish, driving in one and scoring one run, while Hollie Jones scored three of the six Pomeroy runs, going 1-for-4 with a base on balls.
Stephanie Richardson earned the win for the Pomeroys, tossing three innings of shut-out ball, allowing two hits and striking out a pair.
Freshman Erin Schmick saw her bat heat up at the plate for Hazleton. The freshman went 2-for-3 after being robbed in her first plate appearance. Brean Fetterman finished 1-for-2, driving in the lone Hazleton score in relief work in the Hazleton outfield.
Mary Kate Penczkowski earns the tough luck loss for the Lady Lions, throwing a complete game, allowing six runs (three earned) on 10 hits and three walks.
Top 1st
Hollie Jones led off with a walk and advanced to second base on a fielder's choice. Jones would steal third with out in the inning and score on the throw to third base for the game's first run.
Top 2nd
Errors come back to haunt the Lady Lions in the second inning. Jacklyn McClain reaches on an infield throwing error and comes around to score on a pick-off attempt at third base, putting the Pomeroys on top 2-0.
Top 3rd
Hollie Jones slapped a double over third base and advanced to third base on a fly to right field. With two out in the inning, Emma Riffe smoked a line drive through the middle of the infield to expand the lead to 3-0 after three innings.
Bottom 5th
With two outs and a runner on first, Breann Fetterman lines a double to left field. Kiana Lukoskie rounds all the way from first base to tally the first Lady Lion run of the day.
Top 6th
With two outs and two runners aboard, St. Mary of the Woods gets back on the scoreboard with consecutive hits. A single by Baylee Waters loads the bases and Kerri Schrock drives in a pair of scores with a double to left field, bringing the score to 5-1 in favor of the Pomeroys.
Top 7th
The Pomeroys would load the bases with one out in the final inning, sending Breanna Lange back to the plate for her fourth appearance. Lange would come through with a base knock to centerfield, scoring one and keeping the bases loaded. Penczkowski would induce an inning ending double play on a soft pop-up to second base, escaping with just one run allowed, but that run would hold up as the final score of the game, a 6-1 win for St. Mary of the Woods.
Next Up
The Lady Lions return to Pennsylvania where they'll continue the regular season in the coming weeks. Hazleton will continue non-conference play on March 17 when they travel to Cedar Crest College for a Friday double-header.
