Lady Lions drop home opener to Lackawanna
Hazleton, Pa. - Coming off a season opening win, things did not go the Lady Lions way on Thursday night when they took their home court for the first time in 2019 against nationally ranked Lackawanna College. Hazleton fell behind by double figures in the first quarter of play and Lackawanna rolled through the remaining periods for a 111-56 victory.
The Lions held their own at times on Thursday but the Falcon lineup was too much for Hazleton in the end. Lackawanna forced 26 turnovers by the Hazleton squad leading to 30 points while outshooting the Lions in convincing fashion 49.4 percent including 11 triples compared to just 27.1 percent shooting for Hazleton. The Lions put up a solid fight on the glass, collecting 47 rebounds despite being outsized by Lackawanna but couldn't generate the offense to keep pace with the high powered Falcons.
Freshman Scarlet Vargas (Bronx, Ny.) topped all scorers for Hazleton with 18 points, going 4-for-11 from beyond the arc while adding eight rebounds. Freshman Brianna Clark (Effort, Pa) added 11 points in just 17 minutes of work while freshman Katura McCorkle (Philadelphia, Pa.) totaled six points and a team high 12 rebounds in the loss.
Next up: Hazleton is back on their home court on Monday, November 11 when they host Penn State York for an exhibition game before heading north next weekend for a non-conference bout with NCAA DIII opponent SUNY Delhi on November 16.
