Lady Lions top Penn State Beaver 5-0
Hazleton, Pa. - Hazleton's set the pace in the first half, netting four scores in the opening segment against Penn State Beaver at the Hazleton campus on Monday afternoon. The Lady Lions tacked on an insurance goal in second frame but one would be enough in this one as Hazleton notched their third straight shut-out in the conference. With a 5-0 win on Monday, the Lady Lions have now out-scored Penn State University Athletic Conference opponents by a healthy margin of 25-0.
Hazleton used good ball movement to jump out to an early lead. Just four minutes into the game, junior Breann Fetterman (Mountain Top, Pa.) located junior Madison Polumbo (Hazleton, Pa.) on the right side of the field. Polumbo unloaded from 25 yards out, finding the top left corner and the Lady Lions were off and running. Hazleton would strike again in the 17th and 18th minutes. Senior Lauren Degler (Oley Valley, Pa.) dumped a ball into the box, finding freshman Emma Wyllie (Benton, Pa.) wide open for her first score of the day and just one minute later, Fetterman would strike for her second assist of the day. The Hazleton midfielder fed senior Katie Oldziejewski (Wilkes-Barre, Pa.) up the left side of the field chipping the ball up over the keeper to give the Lady Lions a 3-0 advantage. Freshman Hannah Wolhforth (Bloomsburg, Pa.) put the exclamation point on a stellar first half for the Lady Lions, cleaning up a rebound resulting from an Emma Wyllie shot off the Beaver netminder.
The Lions need only hang on with their four score cushion as play resumed in the second half and Hazleton's defense did exactly that. The Lion's backfield cleared nearly every attempt by Beaver to get back in the game, allowing just five shots in the final period and zero shots on goal. With just over 20 minutes to play Hazleton transitioned from defense to offense, sealing up the victory. This time it was Fetterman and Wyllie linking up on a give and go play ending in Wyllie's second and final tally of the afternoon.
Next up: Hazleton will look for a repeat performance when they have their second meeting with Penn State Schuylkill on Thursday, October 4. Hazleton will travel to Schuylkill Haven, Pa. for a 4:00 p.m. kickoff.
