Hazleton, Pa. - The Nittany Lions Women's Soccer team traveled west over the weekend to face off with Penn State New Kensington and Penn State Beaver. The Lions struggled on Saturday, falling 10-0 at New Kensington in a non-conference matchup but Hazleton bounced back to win their second contest of the year against Penn State Beaver, this time racking up a 9-0 win on the road.
Saturday, October 19 - Penn State Hazleton 0, Penn State New Kensington 10 - Final
The newly formed New Kensington squad caught the Lions off-guard in this one. A quick score in the third minute of play opened the flood gates as the home team poured in four scores in the first 28 minutes of action. Hazleton managed to keep New Kensington off the board for nearly 35 minutes of play midway through the game, but New Kensington scored five goals in the 15 minute stretch of play late in the second half that saw New Kensington's Bella Oskin and Samara Ayodele earn hat tricks for the day. A late score by the home squad made it 10-0 shortly before the final horn. Hazleton earned just four shot attempts in the game compared to 33 for New Kensington who controlled the tempo for much of the afternoon.
Sunday, October 20 - Penn State Hazleton 9, Penn State Beaver 0 - Final
The second game of the weekend could not have been more different than the first. This one saw the Lions out-shoot their opponents 39-8 and hold the corner kick advantage 6-3. Second year player Alyssa Marlowe got the scoring started for Hazleton, picking up an unassisted score in the 14th minute of the game. Beaver kept the game within reach for the next 17 minutes of play but the Lions would strike for three more goals in the half, all of which came off the foot of second year player Alexis Marotto. Marlowe assisted on all three scores with second year Kaycee Cadden earning an assist as well, putting Hazleton up 4-0 at the break.
As the second half began, Hazleton continued to pour on the offense. First year defender Ella Thuringer pushed forward on a run in the 49th minute of the game to score her second goal of the season and midway through the period, Marotto struck for three more goals, doubling her season total with six scores on the day. In the 87 minute, Marlowe book-ended the game with her second goal of the game, giving Hazleton a 9-0 win and happy bus ride home.
Hazleton has just one more contest left in the regular season, a road contest out of conference at Manor College. Kick off at Manor is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
