Lehigh, Pa. - The Penn State Hazleton Lady Lions (1-10, 0-5 PSUAC) volleyball team's struggles continued on Sunday, dropping a pair of Penn State University Athletic Conference matches to Penn State Schuylkill and Brandywine in straight sets. With the conclusion of play Sunday, the team's streak of losses increased to ten in a row, a slump the Lions are eager to reverse after losing both matches by scores of 3-0.
Match 1: Penn State Schuylkill 3, Penn State Hazleton 0
Penn State Schuylkill took an advantage on the neutral court to earn their third consecutive win on the 2015 season. Schuylkill outhit the Lady Lions handily with a hitting percentage of .189 to a -.82 by the Hazleton squad and scored 25 service aces in the match to win by scores of 25-11 (set one), 25-10 (set two), and 25-16 (set three). Kristina Johnson led the Schuylkill team with nine kills and eight aces, while teammate Marla Stoner supplied 15 assists. Sophomore Cheyenne Comfort and and Junior Tina Beiland (Philadelphia, Pa.) led the Hazleton attackers with three kills each.
Match 2: Penn State Brandywine 3, Penn State Hazleton
Errors plague the Lady Lions in match two against the second place squad from Brandywine. Hazleton servers combined for nine service errors and struggled to handle the Brandywine service game accumulating 17 failed receptions. The Lady Lions lost in three sets by scores of 25-10 (set one), 25-20 (set two), and 25-11 (set three). Brandywine was led by Nicole Costa, Halee Kusner and Nicole Poissant with seven kills each, while Sullivan Stark added 18 assists. Penn State Hazleton was led by Tina Beiland with three kills and two services aces, with freshman Hailey Trasacco adding two kills respectively.
Next up: Hazleton returns to the Thomas M. Caccese Gymnasium on Wednesday to face off in another PSUAC contest. The Lady Lions will look to bounce back from defeat when they meet Penn State Wilkes-Barre at 6:00 p.m.
