HAZLETON, Pa. - Penn State Hazleton jumped out early and often as they swept Central Penn College in a non-conference volleyball match in the Dr. Thomas M. Caccese Gymnasium. The Lady Lions 3-0 (25-6, 25-18, 25-12) win gives them two in a row and puts them above .500 for the first time in three years.
Despite being outhit in the first set, Hazleton dominated the first set to win 25-6. The Lady Lions jumped out to a 13-1 lead on the Knights and never looked back. The second set started similarly as Hazleton grabbed a 5-0 lead, but Central Penn bounced back with four straight points of their own. After trading points for a while, Hazleton extended their advantage to 13-7. After the Knights cut the lead to three at 14-11, Hazleton scored 11 of the final 18 points for a 25-18 win and a 2-0 set lead.
The final set saw senior Miranda Dunne serve seven straight points, including six aces as Hazleton jumped out to an 8-1 lead. Central Penn battled back to make it 11-8, but the Lions rattled off seven straight points behind freshman Nicole Barnes' serve to make it 18-8. A few Central Penn errors later and a kill from sophomore Hailey Trasacco (Hamden, Ct.) contributed to the final set score of 25-12.
Top Performers
Hazleton had four players with multiple kills, led by freshman Nicole Barnes (Susquehanna, Pa.) with three. Senior Miranda Dunne (Montrose, Pa.) dished out six assists and had a match-highs with 10 service aces and five digs. Senior Tina Beiland (Philadelphia, Pa.) added two kills, three aces and two digs.
Central Penn was led by Bachelle Upshur with six kills and four digs.

The Lady Lions embark on a weekend trek south for four conference games. Hazleton will face Penn State Schuylkill and Penn State Brandywine on Saturday in Media, Pa. before heading to Penn State Mont Alto on Sunday. Matches start at 2:00 p.m. at the Brandywine quad match, with Sunday's tri-match featuring games against Penn State Mont Alto at 12:00 p.m. and Penn State Lehigh Valley at 2:00 p.m.
