Hazleton tops York for first conference win
Hazleton, Pa. - Hazleton picked up their first Penn State University Athletic Conference victory on Wednesday night with a three sets to one victory in the Dr. Thomas M. Cacesse Gymnasium over Penn State York. The Lady Lions won the first two sets by scores of 25-9 and 25-23 and looked to have firm command of the match until York held off a major rally by Hazleton to steal set three, 25-22. Despite the hiccup in the third frame, Hazleton bounced back for 25-18 win in the fourth to improve their record to 2-4 on the season and 1-2 in the PSUAC.
Freshman RosaLydia Caputo (Howard Beach, Ny.) led off the game with a pair of service aces and the freshman went on to tag York for seven kills in set one as Hazleton ran away for the early lead. Caputo would go on to lead Hazleton with a season high 13 kills and seven aces, adding 12 digs in the winning effort. Junior Abby Bessoir (Dunmore, Pa.) added 10 kills on the night followed by freshman Payton Fogarty (Kinnelon, Nj.) who had a season high nine kills. Continuing the trend of best efforts of the year, tossing out 33 assists Wednesday night was sophomore Alessandra Banta (Coatesville, Pa.) and freshman libero Caitlyn Williams (Kingsley, Pa.) held down the defense with 23 digs to her credit.
