Hazleton lands 2nd place finish at Penn State Blue Course
State College, Pa. - Senior Brandon Haydt (Hobbie, Pa.) continued his steady improvements on the links with an 83 on Tuesday at the University Park Blue Course in the Penn State University Athletic Conference Invitational event. Haydt's round was tied for second best on the day amongst all other competitors, just one stroke behind Lehigh Valley's Shane Rhode's 82. Hazleton golfers combined for a score of 342, trailing Lehigh Valley by two strokes for their second runner of finish in the first three matches.
After opening his round with a routine two-putt par, Haydt stumbled on his second hole with a triple bogey. The senior steadied his round by hitting 80 percent of fairways with the driver and making key par saves on the fast greens of the Blue Course. Haydt hit a streak of 6 straight pars midway through the round and nailed a 15 footer on his final hole to save his 83 for the day.
Joining the senior with solid scores of their own were freshman Katie Behnert (Montandon, Pa.) and sophomore Garrett Madison (Canadensis, Pa.) who both shot scores of 85. Sophomore Ty Morzilla suffered a rare off-day with the sticks, firing a season high 89.
Next up: The Nittany Lion golfers will take to the course next Monday, September 28 at 11:00 a.m. when they tee off at their home course. Valley Country Club will host the 4th PSUAC contest of the year as Hazleton looks to get back in the win column.
