Hazleton earns PSUAC and National Player of the Week Honors
Hazleton, Pa. - On Tuesday, Hazleton slugger Vanessa Michael and hurler Samantha Varela were named both PSUAC and USCAA National Players of the week. The Lady Lions swept this week's awards with stellar performances as they picked up four wins over Penn State Schuylkill and Penn State Wilkes-Barre.
Hitter of the Week - Sophomore #31 - Vanessa Michael (Bloomsburg, Pa.)
Michael led Hazleton to a pair of wins over Penn State Schuylkill with a two home run, 10 RBI effort in the double header on March 30. Michael tagged a grand slam in her second at-bat of game one, then went deep with a three run shot in her first at-bat of game two. Later on April 4, Michael notched her third home run of the week, a solo blast in a 15-0 win over Wilkes-Barre. Michael would finish that game 2-for-2 with four RBI totaling 14 RBI for the week.
Pitcher of the Week - Sophomore #14 - Sam Varela (Hazleton, Pa.)
Varela notched a pair of shut-out wins in PSUAC play this week over Penn State Schuylkill and Penn State Wilkes-Barre. The sophomore allowed just three hits and one walk, striking out four in the 9-0 win over Schuylkill and followed that performance with a perfect game, no-hit effort against Wilkes-Barre. Varela retired all 12 batters she faced in the 15-0, four inning affair, striking out a season high 10 batters.
