Wilkes-Barre, PA – The Lady Lions played their final regular season contest on the road against NCAA Division 3 opponent Wilkes University (10-12) this afternoon. Despite holding the Colonels to just 22 points in the first half, Penn State Hazleton (17-5, 11-3 PSUAC) failed to convert on the offensive end leading to a 65-47 defeat.
Defense reigned supreme in the first half for both teams as Hazleton held Wilkes University to just 19.4 percent from the field while the Colonels held the Lady Lions to 25.9 percent shooting. A brief run in the second half drove Hazleton to a 26-22 lead, but the Wilkes offense quickly heated up, pulling away from Hazleton with a 13-2 offensive run of their own. Hazleton crept back to within three points of the Colonels but foul trouble and continued shooting struggles for the Lady Lions, ultimately led Wilkes University to a cozy 18 point victory over Hazleton.
Offensive leader Alexis Daly (Wyalusing, PA) struggled to stay on the floor in both halves scoring just 5 points prior to exiting the game due to foul trouble midway through the second half. Taylor Cannon (Hazleton, PA) was the only Lady Lion to reach double figures, tallying a 13 point, 14 rebound effort. Stephanie Guevara (North Brunswick, NJ) added 8 points, 11 rebounds and 4 assists.
Leading the Colonels offensive attack was Elena Stambone. Stambone finished the contest with a game-high 20 points, adding 6 rebounds and 5 assists. Chelsea Brown assisted Wilkes' winning effort, pitching in 8 points and 12 rebounds.
The Lady Lions conclude their regular season on an 0-2 road slide. Penn State Hazleton will look to put the brakes on their late season skid as they gear up for a home matchup in the first round of the Penn State University Athletic Conference Postseason. Playoffs will begin on Wednesday, Feb. 18 at the Thomas M. Caccese Gymnasium. Time and opponent to be announced soon.
