Wilkes Women Overpower Hazleton Lady Lions
The Wilkes University women's basketball team set a new program record with 27 assists as well as had four players hit double figure points in its 93-79 win at Penn State Hazleton Monday night in non-conference action at the Dr. Thomas M. Cacesse Gymnasium.
Last night at the Dr. Thomas M. Cacesse Gymnasium, the Wilkes Univeristy Lady Colonels spoiled a career night by Penn State Hazleton's Mckenzie Prutsman. Prutzman scored 16 points from the floor, connected on one three-pointer and was an amazing 16-18 from the charity stripe but it wasn't enough as four of Wilkes' starters scored double figures and the team set a new program record with 27 assists in its 93-79 win. The Lady Lion's Shelby Berger added 14 points and 12 rebounds. The Lady Colonels were led by double-doubles from Gianna Roberts and Catey McFadden. Teammates Alyssa Alfano and Jamie Campbell chipped in 16 and 10 points respectively.
The Lady Colonels built their lead to as many as 27 points with 5:10 left in the game and with the victory improved to 4-8 on the season while Penn State Hazleton fell to 4-5.
Wilkes led Penn State Hazleton by 20 rebounds pulling down 63 compared to the Lady Lions' 43. The Lady Colonels also dominated 54-24 in points in the paint and 30-3 in bench scoring. Penn State got off to a slow start in the first quarter and Wilkes went ahead by 20 for the first time at 35-15 with 8:20 left in the second quarter. The Lady Lions cut the lead to 13 points with 3:43 left in the quarter but the Lady Colonels went on a 12-2 run to go back up by 23 points and took a 57-34 lead into halftime. Hazleton matched Wilkes in the third quarter and outscored the Lady Colonels in the fourth, but could not overcome the deficit set in the first half.
Hazleton returns to action Wednesday night when it travels to Summerdale, Pa. to take on Penn College at 7:00 p.m.
