Lady Lions lock up the #2 seed with win at Mont Alto
Mont Alto, Pa. - Playing in their final regular season conference game of the year, the Lady Lions scored a 5-2 victory on the road at Penn State Mont Alto. Saturday's victory pushed Hazleton to a 5-1 record in the Penn State University Athletic Conference and locked up a home playoff game for the Lady Lions as they secured the number two seed in the PSUAC postseason.
Hazleton got off to a hot start in Saturday's contest, jumping out to a 3-0 in the first 25 minutes of play. Junior Breann Fetterman (Mountain Top, Pa.) kicked off the Lions' scoring efforts, tapping in a crossing pass from senior Katie Oldziejewski (Wilkes-Barre, Pa.) in the ninth minute of play. Oldziejewski herself would follow with a tally of her own 13 minutes later and freshman Emma Wyllie (Benton, Pa.) would cap the first half scoring run with her ninth goal of the season. But Hazleton's three score cushion wouldn't last as Mont Alto responded to close the half. Just 35 seconds after the Wyllie score, Mont Alto cut into Hazleton's three goal margin and further closed the gap in the 41st minute of play to get within one score of Hazleton by the midway point.
The Lady Lions would use halftime to gain their composure and shut down any further opportunities for Mont Alto. The Hazleton squad out-shot the home team 13-0 in the final period picking up scores from senior Ariel Rowlands (Dorrance, Pa.) and Oldziejewski to sure up the win by the final tally of 5-2.
Next up: With Hazleton's non-league match with Penn State Lehigh Valley postponed for Sunday, the Lady Lions may face a seven day layover before the next trip to the pitch. Hazleton will greet NCAA III opponent Alfred State at the Hazleton campus on Sunday, October 21 before gearing up for the conference playoffs.
