The Nittany Lions fell short to Bluefield University in an 8-1 battle during their home opening game Saturday in Hazleton.
Bluefield came prepared to play, opening the game with a total of 5 points in the first half and 3 more points in the second half. Leading the way for Bluefield was Sara Cox, with a total of 2 goals for her team. In addition, her teammates Tindall, Crawford, Nicely, Spaulding, Thacker, and Newman all came up with a goal for Bluefield.
"We were really excited to come up here and see what we have been building on the last several weeks at our practices; it was exciting to see a bunch of people score and make those improvements from our first loss," said Bluefield's head coach Patrick Ritter.
The Nittany Lions showed some life in the second half of play, with action from the sophomores on the team. Alyssa Marlowe scored a goal for the Lions with an assist from her teammate Alexis Morrotto.
"I think we did really good for the first game of the season. We have a lot to work on, but this game gives us a good start to our season," said Penn State Hazleton Head Coach Ariel Rowlands .
The Nittany Lions next match will be a home game on Tuesday, September 3rd. The Lions will take on Lehigh Carbon Community College for a 5:00 p.m. out of conference game.
