Hazleton makes it four straight with win at Scranton
Dunmore, Pa. - Hazleton faced a hungry Penn State Scranton squad on Sunday, but battled through close sets to prevail with a 3-0 over their Penn State University Athletic Conference rival. The win makes it four straight PSUAC victories for the Lady Lions who move to 4-1 in the conference with an overall record of 7-3.
Each frame could have gone one way or another, but the second set proved pivotal for the Hazleton victory. Hazleton trailed 18-11 midway through the frame until a ten point run from service line by senior libero Lauren Nietz (Coaldale, Pa.) turned the tide. Hazleton would go on to win the set 25-21 and take firm grasp of the match. Facing elimination, Scranton was unable to muster a comeback in the third outing and succumbed to the Lady Lions in straight sets.
It was a solid day for Nietz who led the Lady Lions with 12 assists and 12 digs. Sophomores Chelsey Dominguez (Bronx, Ny.) and Samaya Hornsby (Richmond, Ca.) led the squad with four kills each.
Next up: Hazleton will try to keep the positive momentum going as the take on Penn State Wilkes-Barre in the Dr. Thomas M. Cacesse Gymnasium on Tuesday, September 25 at 7:00 p.m.
