Hazleton falters in four sets at Davis College
Johnson City, Ny. - Davis College brought the Lady Lions five game win streak to an end Tuesday night, topping Hazleton three sets to one. Both teams split the first two frames but the Falcons took advantage of a number of Hazleton miscues combined with a strong service attack to squeak out the pivotal third set by the score of 25-22. The Lady Lions lost by a combined seven points which included a tie-breaker point in the deciding fourth set, but could not convert to extend the match.
A solid effort went unrewarded Tuesday night with Hazleton out-hitting the Falcons 33-32 in kills and 33-32 in the assists category, but in the end it was Hazleton's service game that let them down in this one. The Lady Lions knocked in 10 aces on the evening but an uncharacteristic 16 service errors spelled defeat for the squad. Sophomores Samaya Hornsby (Richmond, Ca.)and Chelsey Dominguez (Bronx Ny.) led Hazleton in hitting with eight and seven kills respectively while freshman Alessandra Banta (Coatesville, Pa.) issued 24 assists. Senior Lauren Nietz (Coaldale, Pa.) registered a season-high 36 digs to give her 187 for the season.
Next up: The Lady Lions will face a stern test over the weekend against the western division of the Penn State University Athletic Conference. Hazleton will play four non-league contests throughout a two-day event at Penn State Fayette beginning at 4:00 p.m. on Saturday with games against Beaver and Greater Allegheny. New Kensington and host team Penn State Fayette will round out the western trip on Sunday beginning at 2:30 p.m.
