Du Bois Slides Past Hazleton 81-69
Penn State Du Bois had four players hit double figures and outscored Penn State Hazleton 81-69 Friday night in PSUAC play at the Dr. Thomas M. Cacesse Gymnasium. Hazleton placed three players in double figures, but it was not enough to match the Du Bois attack.
It was a tale of two halves for Penn State Hazleton in the team's 81-69 loss to Penn State Du Bois at the Dr. Thomas M. Cacesse Gymnasium on Friday night, Jan. 26th.
After shooting a hot 48% from the field during the first 20 minutes, scoring 40 points and holding a nine point lead at the half , the local Lions (4-10, 3-5 PSUAC East) managed just a 33% shooting clip in the second half. The visiting Lions from Du Bois outscored Hazleton by 21 points after halftime.
Jonathan Fogarty scored a team-high 19 points on 7-12 shooting from the field and 3-4 shooting from the foul line, while Nick Nowak added another 17 points. Shay Nelson was the third Nittany Lion to reach the double-digit scoring mark with 10 on 4-9 shooting night from the floorand 2-3 from the charity stripe. Tristan Pierce came off the bench for Du Bois and torched Hazleton for 18 points, while teammates Hezekiah Hopkins, Jordan Knappenberger and Jacob Perin hit for 13, 13 and 10 points respectively.
After the teams traded the lead 4 times in the opening 12 minutes, Hazleton was able to create some breathing room at the 9:30 mark and headed into the break holding a nine point lead 40-31. After a Matt Manbeck score to open the half, Du Bois (9-10, 6-4 PSUAC West) charged out quickly regained the advantage thanks to hot shooting and a stingy defense. Things turned sour when Du Bois put together a 11-1 run that gave the visitors their first double-digit lead of the night with 9:35 left to play. With five minutes left, Hazleton would not give up and made another charge. Just as the local Lions looked poised to make a push at the 3:39 mark when Jonathan Fogarty , Du Bois went on an run over the next 3:00 that essentially put things out of reach. When the final buzzer sounded Hazleton found its self of the short end of the scoreboard, 81-69
Hazleton jumps right back into the fray with a PSUAC game at home, Tuesday night against conference foe Penn State Worthington Scranton. Tip off time in Cacesse Gymnasium is slated for 8:00 PM.
