HAZLETON, Pa. -- The Penn State Hazleton Men's Soccer team fell 2-1 to Penn State New Kensington on Saturday afternoon in a Penn State University Athletic Conference contest. The loss drops Hazleton to 3-5 overall, and 2-4 in the PSUAC.
Hazleton fell behind early with an own goal from outside mid-fielder Ryan Hanrahan (Clifton Heights, Pa.) in the fifth minute. After another slow start, the Nittany Lions battled back, drawing level just 20 minutes later. Hazleton's goal came from mid-fielder Joseph Torres (Garden City, NY) after a cross from team captain Ryan Lieb (Yardley, Pa.). Leib beat a defender crossed the ball to Torres who was waiting alone around the penalty area. Torres tucked the ball away coolly to the back post to make it 1-1. New Kensington scored their second goal just five minutes into the second half on a full volley from Pascal Bikanura only six yards from the goal. Hazleton failed to find the back of the net in the final 65 minutes, ending what had been a three game winning streak.
New Kensington lead the way with 15 shots in the game and Hazleton tallying 10. Logan Yacowatz (Sugarloaf, Pa.) of Hazleton made 9 saves and New Kensington made 7 saves.
Hazleton returns to Penn State University Athletic Conference play on Tuesday, September 30th when they travel to Penn State Schuykill for a 4:00 p.m. kickoff.
