Lady Lions pounce on Wolfpack for 8-0 victory
Youngwood, Pa. - Coming off their first win of the season, the Lady Lions (2-1) carried that momentum into Sunday's contest against the Lady Wolfpack of Westmoreland County Community College. Hazleton controlled the pace of play from the opening whistle to the final buzzer, outshooting their opponent 48-3 on their way to an 8-0 result. The Lions potent attack kept the pressure in the opponents half of the field all day long, allowing sophomore goalkeeper Julianne Ernest (Danville, Pa.) to pick up her first career shut-out and second straight win for the keeper.
1st Half
Fresh off a multi-score game against Penn State Beaver, Hazleton sophomore Katie Oldziejewskie (Wilkes-Barre, Pa.) energized the Lions early on, notching her first career hat-trick in no less than eight minutes after the opening kickoff. Oldziejewskie, handled a pass from freshman Breann Fetterman (Mountain Top, Pa.) and fired at the low right post to break the ice, then followed up with two quick scores assisted by sophomore Lauren Degler (Oley, Pa.) to give Hazleton the early cushion. As the half came to a close, freshman Madison Polumbo (Hazleton, Pa.) led a charge by the Lady Lions, finding sophomore Olivia Whitmer (Lancaster, Pa.) on the right side of the box. Whitmer went near post to tally her second goal of the season and put Hazleton on top 4-0 by the break.
2nd Half
Madison Polumbo kicked off the second half scoring just three minutes into play, breaking free from defenders to find space in the opponents 18 and launching the ball in the net for her first career score. Ten minutes later, Lauren Degler got into the action and took over the game in the final 30 minutes. The sophomore consistently worked her way into the opponent's box, wreaking havoc on the Wolfpack netminder. Degler unleashed three consecutive scores in the final period, two unassisted and one coming off a fine pass from Fetterman to record a second half hat-trick as Hazleton ran away with contest for the 8-0 victory.
