Polumbo powers Lady Lions past Pratt
Hazleton, Pa. - The Lady Lions were slow out of the gates in Sunday afternoon's home opener but turned in dominant play in the final 45 minutes to pull off a 3-1 win over Pratt Institute. Following a brilliant game-tying score from Sophomore Madison Polumbo (Hazleton, Pa.), Hazleton would break the tie in the 71st minute on a through ball by sophomore Breann Fetterman (Mountain Top. Pa.) that found junior Katie Oldziejewski (Wilkes-Barre, Pa.) on a run up the middle. Oldziejewski would tuck the ball into the bottom left corner of the net for the all important go ahead score and help give the Lady Lions their second victory of the young season.
Moments that Mattered
Tale of Two Halves
Both teams failed to produce scores until the waning moments of the first half but for 44 minutes, nearly all the momentum rest with the Cannoneers. Pratt out-shot Hazleton 10-3, earning quality looks on six corner kick attempts in the period. Pratt would break the 0-0 tie in the final minute of the half but the Lady Lions would proceed to take over the game. Throughout the final 45 minutes and change Hazleton would own the action, registering 12 shots to just three for the visiting squad.
Polumbo Takes Aim From Long Range
Maddy Polumbo help turn the tide for Hazleton following Pratt's go ahead score. Hazleton would push the ball upfield in a hurry and with the clock winding down, freshman Camille Principe (Jim Thorpe, Pa.) would find Polumbo in the middle of the field on a throw in from the Lady Lion bench. With just 20 seconds to play, Polumbo would strike from outside the 18, striking an un-stoppable ball to the upper right 90 that curved past the keeper to tie the game at 1-1 before the break. Later in the 80th minute the sophomore would connect again, this time firing a laser from 30 yards out on a free kick to sure up the victory for the Lady Lions.
