Hazleton, Pa. - Following a record setting performance on Saturday, the Lady Lions' offense sputtered as they resumed their non-conference schedule on Monday night against the University of Cincinnati - Clermont. Hazleton would keep the Cougars off the board for 60 minutes, but eventually Clermont would break through, notching multiple scores in the final 30 minutes to topple the Lady Lions 6-0.
Sophomore Devon Keiper (Wilkes-Barre, Pa.) and the Lady Lion defense served up an excellent performance in the first half. Despite losing the time of possession Hazleton warded of 13 shots on target in the first period, including several brilliant stops by the Hazleton keeper, keeping a clean sheet through 45 minutes. But that would all change midway through the second frame.
The Cougar offense out-shot the Lady Lions 25-2 in the first 45 and continued that trend as play began in the second half. In the 60th minute, the Cougar offense wore down the Hazleton defenders, breaking the stalemate on a score by Lauren Gilbert. With renewed confidence and a 1-0 for the Cougars, the visitors seemingly took advantage of every opportunity to close out the game. Clermont would strike in bunches notching 5 scores in the final 25 minutes of play, turning a tight match into a lopsided affair.
Next up: Hazleton will look to bounce back as they resume Penn State University Athletic Conference play on Wednesday night. The Lady Lions will square off will local rival Penn State Schuylkill on the Hazleton campus at 6:30 p.m.
