Hazleton earns shut out win at Clarks Summit
Clarks Summit, Pa. - An early goal by senior Breann Fetterman (Mountain Top, Pa.) held up as the Hazleton defense secured its third shut out of the season on Saturday at Clarks Summit University. Hazleton tacked on a late insurance for a 2-0 win, improving to 4-1 on the season.
Sunday's game was won and lost in the midfield as both squads were held to single digit scoring attempts but it would be the Lady Lions with the last laugh, making good on two of their six shots on goal. Hazleton took command in the 10th minute of the game when senior Madison Polumbo (Freeland, Pa.) shot a free kick off the goal post. Fetterman crashed the net, collected the ball and sent in the rebound for the game's first tally and her fifth goal of the season. Nearly 77 minutes of scoreless action would ensue thanks to freshman Roxxy Dacosta (Bronx, Ny.) and the Hazleton backfield who contained the Clarks Summit offense to just six shots and one shot on goal. With the game winding down, Hazleton struck for a late insurance goal, once again aided by a free kick. This time it was Fetterman sending the ball into the 18, redirected off the head of senior Ariel Rowlands (Dorrance, Pa.) to sophomore Emma Wyllie (Benton, Pa.) who tucked the ball in to extend the cushion to a 2-0 advantage and seal up the win in the final minutes.
Next up: Hazleton is back in action on Wednesday, September 25 with a visit to Penn State Schuylkill for a 3:00 p.m. contest. Hazleton topped Schuylkill in non-league play earlier this month with a 8-0 win on September 5 and look to repeat the result as Penn State University Athletic Conference play gets under way.
