Lady Lions sweep LCCC in season opener
Nanticoke, PA - The Lady Lions volleyball team opened their season Tuesday night with a win in straight sets against non-conference opponent Luzerne County Community College. With the victory the Lady Lions improve to 1-0 on the season, matching their previous win total from 2014.
Hazleton pulled ahead early in each of the three sets on strong serving performances and capitalizing on opponent miscues. Junior setter Miranda Dunne led the offense with a combination of solid passing attempts and an outstanding serving performance. Dunne distributed 10 assists on the night and combined for 12 service aces throughout the three sets. Aneesha Reese and Cheyenne Comfort proved to be benefactors of Dunne's quality passing as the pair combined for an .500 kill percentage. Reese scored four kills on the night while adding six service aces of her own. Comfort garnered four kills on offense while leading the team defensively with four digs. Collectively the Lady Lions combined for 25 service aces and 17 kills in the match.
Luzerne County Community College struggled to get the offense going in Tuesday night's match. The Trailblazers were outhit by Hazleton with a -.161 kill percentage to the Lady Lions .222 on the night, combining for 11 errors on their attack attempts. The Trailblazers were led by Shelby Zimmerman, scoring 3 kills on the evening with two aces and three digs respectively.
Next up: The Lady Lions are off to a great start and return to Hazleton for three days of practice before heading back on the road. The Lady Lions travel Saturday to SUNY Delhi for a pair of non-conference matchups against the host team as well as Broome Community College.
