Quillman, Rhome at it again, Lady Lions earn pair of wins vs. Mont Alto

Hazleton, PA - Penn State Hazleton returned to Penn State University Athletic Conference after having their 10 game win streak snapped on the road. The friendly confines Penn State Hazleton were good to the Lady Lions on Saturday, with a pair of shutout victories against PSU Mont Alto. Hazleton survived a close contest in game one by a score of 2-0 and picked up the hitting in game two, ending the contest 8-0 in five innings.

Game 1: Penn State Hazleton 2, Penn State Mont Alto 0 

Bottom 1: After two quick outs in the inning, Brianna Grunza doubled to put herself in scoring position for the Lady Lions. Grunza was able to trot home on the next play as Anrea Quillman pelted her ninth home run of the season, putting the Lions up for good at 2-0.

Behind the Box Score:

  • Quillman's nine home runs  and 46 RBI lead all PSUAC and United States Collegiate Athletics Association competitors.
  • Kayla Rhome picks up win number 9 on the season, throwing a complete game shutout. Rhome allowed just four hits and a pair of walks while striking out seven in the victory.

Game 2: Penn State Hazleton 8, Penn State Mont Alto 0 (Final, 5 Innings)

Bottom 1: Hazleton picks up an early lead when a Kaitlyn Kaluzny walk scores on an Mont Alto error. A double from Erin Dougherty scores Quillman to put the Lady Lions up 2-0.

Bottom 2: Britani Esser doubles and scores on an RBI single from Kaluzny.

Bottom 3: After a Dougherty score courtesy of a defensive miscue, Esser picks up her second hit of the ball game with a an RBI single to score Brandi Grunza.

Bottom 4: Hazleton puts the game out of reach scoring three runs on three hits in the inning from Sara Stauffer, Brianna Grunza, and Quillman, giving Hazleton the 8-0 adavantage.

Behind the Box Score:

  • Stauffer silences Mont Alto hitting throwing five shutout innings, allowing one hit and striking out three en route to her fourth win on the year.
  • seven different Hazleton starters pitch in for hits and runs scored in game two.
