Banner day for Behnert: Freshman honored at PSUAC basketball event
Hazleton, Pa. - Freshman golfer Katie Behnert (Montandon, Pa.) was recognized Wednesday night with the unveiling of her 2015 United States Collegiate Athletic Association women's division championship banner. The ceremony was held during intermission of the men's and women's basketball games against Penn State Schuylkll.
Joining in the presentation of a framed picture from Katie's championship round and the unveiling were Penn State Hazleton Chancellor, Dr. Gary Lawler, Director of Athletics, Ryan Ehrie, Penn State Hazleton Golf Coach, Jason Martonick, and Katie's mother, Stacy Behnert.
On October 12th and 13th, Behnert participated in the concurrently run Penn State University Athletic Conference championship and USCAA championship event at the Penn State Blue Course in State College, Pa. Behnert shot a combined score of 174 at the two-day event to capture the second ever USCAA women's division title.
On day two of the tournament, Behnert birdied a pair of par fives to maintain her two stroke advantage over the defending champion, Kristy Hanes of Penn State DuBois. The freshman chipped in for birdie on the par five, fifth hole of the Blue Course, then made birdie on the ninth after her approach shot came within four feet of the cup.
Katie's championship achievement is the first such accomplishment in the 10 history of the golf program at Penn State Hazleton. Her banner, commemorating the title, now resides in the Dr. Thomas M. Caccese Gymnasium.
