Valley Country Club shows its teeth
Conyngham, Pa. - Competitors were treated to difficult conditions on Thursday at the annual Penn State Hazleton Invitational, held at the Tillinghast designed Valley Country Club. High winds combined with the lightning fast undulating greens of the valley course proved a difficult challenge for much of the field leading to an average score of over 93 strokes per player. Penn College's Jordan Wise was the lone competitor to tame the course and manage the tough conditions, earning medalist honors with an eight over par round of 79. Wise's efforts, combined with Austin Moscariello's nine over par round led the way for the Wildcars to capture the team victory with a combined score of 329, 27 strokes better than Penn State Wilkes-Barre and Penn State Mont Alto who tied for second place.
On a day where much of the field struggled, Hazleton was unable to capitalize on their local knowledge of the course. Sophomore Geran Triano (Sugarloaf, Pa.) and senior Zach Kyttle (Berwick, Pa.) were the lone Hazleton golfers to card scores under 90. Triano started slow, but steadied his shot midway through the round to lead Hazleton with an 84, good for a sixth place finish in the field while Kyttle carded an 88 and tied for 10th.
