Hazleton captures victory at Penn State Blue Course
State College, Pa. - Competition is heating up in the Penn State University Athletic Conference and on Monday afternoon, the Nittany Lions from Hazleton earned their first team victory of the season with a win at the Penn State Blue Course. For the second time this season, Hazleton tied for the top combined score on the day but in a reverse of fortune, Monday's win came Hazleton's way during a match of scorecards to break a tie with Penn State Schuylkill. Along with Schuylkill Hazleton shot an aggregate score of 320 Monday led by freshman Jeremy Harper (Mountain Top, Pa.) who tied for the individual medalist award with a two over par round of 74.
With windy and challenging conditions on the course, Harper managed his ball flight as well as anyone on the course Monday. As he's done all season, Harper took advantage of the longest scoring holes, notching three of his four birdies on the day on par fives and used a quality short game around the greens to grind out a plus two round.
Backing up Harper with his third consecutive round in the seventies during PSUAC competition was freshman Mark Lusk (Drums, Pa.) with a five over par round of 77. Lusk finished tied for seventh individually on Monday and has consistently finished alongside the top tier of competitors this season. Senior Joshua Provost (Hazleton, Pa.) and freshman Colin Hoy (Harleysville, Pa.) rounded out the Lions top efforts with rounds of 84 and 85 respectively on their to the team's first top finish at a PSUAC event.
Next up: The Lions play host for the next round of competition as the host the PSUAC and other NCAA squads next Monday, September 30 at the Valley Country Club in Congynham, Pa.
