BINGHAMTON, NY -- John Wasserman (Perkasie, Pa.) knocked in a penalty kick early in the second half, and Penn State Hazleton held on for a 1-0 win over Davis College in a non-conference soccer match on Wednesday afternoon at the Greater Binghamton Sports Complex. The Nittany Lions (5-5-1, 3-4-1 PSUAC), who began the season with four straight losses, have lost only once in their last seven games.
Wasserman's goal was his fourth of the season, tied for second on the team. The opportunity came off of a Steven Principe (Jim Thorpe, Pa.) run towards goal, and as the Falcons goalkeeper came to meet him, tripped Principe resulting in a foul. Wasserman took the penalty kick right center and low as the keeper dove to the left.
The penalty kick was the difference in an otherwise very competitive and even match-up. Each team finished with 11 shots and seven corner kicks, while Logan Yacowatz (Sugarloaf, Pa.) made six saves.
Hazleton returns home on Friday, October 10 when they play host to Penn State Brandywine in their final PSUAC match of the season.
