Varela gets week one nod as hitter of the week

State College, Pa. - Just one week into the season and Samantha Varela (Hazleton, Pa.) is off to a hot start and on Tuesday, the Penn State University Athletic Conference selected the senior as softball's hitter of the week. Varela went 2-for-3 in Monday's first game against Eastern University, smashing a pair of home runs. Varela's second bomb of the game resulted in a grand slam giving the senior five RBI in the 8-0 win. Later in the day, Varela added to her total, with an RBI double and solo shot, her third of the day which helped her squad to a 5-1 over Dominican University. For the week, the senior totaled six hits, all for extra bases, nine RBI and four home runs.
