DuBois, Pa. - A trio of Nittany Lions were named All-Americans by the United States Collegiate Athletic Association this week, a testament to another fine season by the Hazleton Nittany Lion softball players. Topping the list were second team All-Americans senior Mackenzie Joy (Hazleton, Pa.) and freshman Rebecca Baum (Stewartstown, Pa.) along with honorable mention All-American, freshman Linsey Fisk (Millville, Pa.). The three notables combined to produce a very productive Hazleton line up, leading the team to a 15-9 record in the PSUAC and another post season berth for the Lions.
Linsey Fisk - Catcher (Millville, Pa.)
Newcomer Linsey Fisk proved to be a versatile player in the Lions infield but settled in as the team's top catcher for the 2021 season. Fisk established great connections with the pitching staff and cemented herself in the middle of the line up as a powerful right-handed bat. The freshman led Hazleton with four home runs which was also the third highest total in the conference. Fisk added a team high with 19 runs batted in to go along with a .338 batting average. Fisk tallied six multi-hit games on the season and 13 of her 27 hits in 2021 went for extra bases.
Rebecca Baum - P/OF (Stewartstown, Pa.)
Freshman Rebecca Baum was locked in at the plate and from the circle for nearly the entire 2021 season. Baum led Hazleton with a .400 batting average which ranked seventh in the PSUAC and provided a quality bat at the top and bottom of the order. Baum started slow but by the end of the year had hit her stride, notching six multi-hit games in the team's final 12 outings of the year and finishing the season with 26 hits, 13 runs batted in and 15 runs scored. In addition to her efforts at the plate, Baum was even more proficient from the circle. The freshman tied for the team lead with a 2.70 earned run average as well as wins with a 6-5 record while finishing sixth in conference in strikeouts inducing 56 K's.
Mackenzie Joy - 1B/P (Hazleton, Pa.)
Hazleton's lone senior did not disappoint in her third and final year in uniform. Joy was a singles machine throughout a year where she collected a team high 29 base hits in 25 games played. Joy went on a tear in the middle of the season, racking up a 10 game hit streak that included eight games with two or more hits. Joy finished the season with a .382 batting average, 12 runs batted in and 18 runs scored. The senior added six appearances in the circle for Hazleton, securing two wins and a 3.57 earned run average to cap an impressive senior season.
