Matenkoski boosts the Nittany Lion outfield
Hazleton, Pa. - Penn State Hazleton Softball is pleased to announce the arrival of outfielder Athena Matenkoski of Drums, Pa. to the incoming class of 2021-22. The speedy left hander from Marian Catholic High School propelled her team to one of the top regular season records in the Schuylkill League as well as an appearance in the District XI softball semi-finals with one of the top batting averages in the state of Pennsylvania. Matenkoski finished the year with a .652 batting average that included nine multi-hit games during the regular season. In addition to her stellar batting performance, Athena totaled eight hits for extra bases including a pair of home runs while notching 18 RBI and 30 runs scored in her final year at Marian Catholic.
Matenkoski will look to hit the ground running and make an immediate impact in the lineup and the Nittany Lion outfield as the team gears up for a run at the PSUAC championship in the spring of 2022. Off the field, Athena plans on working towards a degree in communications from the university while pursuing a career in journalism.
