Lady Lions win season opener at Luzerne
Nanticoke, Pa. - It was all Penn State Hazleton on Saturday as the squad methodically built their lead from the second period on to pick up their first win of the season with a 91-48 victory at Luzerne County Community College.
Hazleton dominated the glass to the tune of 75 rebounds to just 29 boards for Luzerne while also outshooting the Trailblazers with 43.2 percent shooting from the field to earn the lopsided win. Luzerne kept within reach up until the early portions of the second period but with the score at 23-17 in favor of Hazleton, the Lions used a 14-0 run over a five minute stretch to take command with a 20 point cushion and never looked back. The Lions withstood a 40 point effort from Luzerne's Lisa Radziak but with 12 different Lady Lions chipping in with scores, the Hazleton offense was too much for the Trailblazers to keep up with.
Leading the way for Hazleton was freshman Scarlet Vargas (Bronx, Ny.) with 23 on 9-of-19 shooting from the field which included four makes from beyond the arc while adding six rebounds and five dimes. Freshman Katura McCorkle (Philadelphia, Pa.) added 16 points and seven rebounds while freshman RosaLydia Caputa (Howard Beach, Ny.) pitched in with 15 points, eight boards and a pair of blocked shots to round out Hazleton's top efforts on Satruday.
Next up: Hazleton will get a tough test their next time out on the court when they match up with Lackawanna College. The Lions will host the Falcons in the Dr. Thomas M. Cacesse Gymnasium on Thursday, November 7 with a 6:30 p.m. tip off.
