Offense stalls in loss to Bryn Athyn
Hazleton, Pa. - A tough shooting night saw the Nittany Lions Women's Basketball team fall on their home court to Bryn Athyn College on Thursday night. Hazleton shot just 22.6 percent on the night and committed 26 turnovers leading to the lopsided defeat as Bryn Athyn connected on 33-of-78 attempts from the field, topping Hazleton 81-35.
Both teams started off slow on Thursday night. Bryn Athyn scored the opening bucket but both teams would remain tied at 2-2 through nearly five minutes of play but the visitors would soon heat up. Bryn Athyn struck for three triples to close out the quarter with a double-figure lead and continued to pull ahead throughout the remainder of the half. Injuries and turnovers hurt the Lions efforts to keep the game within reach, as Hazleton notched just 11 points in the first twenty minutes of play, trailing 37-11 at halftime. Hazleton picked up their play on both ends of the floor in the second half, getting a combined 12 point effort from second year players Topaz Williams-Fripp and Brianna Kennedy in the third quarter. But Bryn Athyn continued to connect from inside the paint and from beyond the arc, extending their lead in the fourth quarter. There, the visitors shot over 66 percent from the field and tacked on three triples to move ahead by the final score of 81-35.
Kennedy finished the night as the Nittany Lions top scorer, toting 17 points with 13 rebounds. Williams-Fripp added 10 points, seven rebounds and three steals in the loss as Hazleton wraps up their final non-conference match up of the semester. The Lions will look to get back on track on Saturday when Hazleton travels to Penn State New Kensington for a 2:00 p.m. conference game before they head into the Thanksgiving break.
