McKeesport, Pa. - The Lady Lions (2-14, 1-8 PSUAC) dropped a pair of matches on Saturday afternoon during leg one of their western Pennsylvania State University Athletic Conference road swing at the Penn State Greater Allegheny campus. Hazleton took on the host team in game one, splitting the first two sets, but losing the final pair to fall to Greater Allegheny(4-5, 3-3 PSUAC) by a score of 3-1. Later in the afternoon, the Lady Lions faced Penn State Beaver (11-7, 7-1 PSUAC) but were overpowered by the fourth place team and fell 3-0 for their second loss of the day.
Game 1: Penn State Greater Allegheny 3, Penn State Hazleton 0
The Lady Lions got off to a slow start in game one, scoring just 11 points in the opening frame against Greater Allegheny, but rebounded in set two to square the match at 1-1. Unable to capture momentum, the Lady Lions succumbed to the service game of Greater Allegheny, allowing 31 service aces and 33 kills by the outside hitters of of the home team. Hazleton would go on to lose sets three and four by scores of 25-16, and 25-15.
Game 2: Penn State Beaver 3, Penn State Hazleton 0
Hazleton was outmatched in the afternoon's second game with Penn State Beaver. The Lady Lions managed just 26 combined points in the three sets as Beaver's high powered service game and hard-hitting attacks at the net left no room for error on the part of Hazleton. The Lady Lions handled the opponents serve but a plethora of errors allowed Penn State Beaver to run away with the match. Hazleton would go down in three sets by scores of 25-13, 25-6 and 25-7.
Junior Tina Beiland (Philadelphia, Pa.) led Hazleton with three kills with junior Miranda Dunne supplying four assists and five digs.
Penn State Beaver was led by Jenna Petrucci's 11 kills and eight digs, while Brenda Martinez scored three kills and 22 assists.
Next up: Hazleton remains in western Pennsylvania for two additional matches on Sunday. Hazleton will face Penn State Fayette at 12:00 noon, followed by a match with the host team, Penn State New Kensington at 2:00 p.m.
