Hazleton drops 3rd game Monday vs. St. Mary's
Cocoa Beach, FL - Hazleton was unable to make it 3 for 3 on Monday as it squared off in a single game matchup against United State Collegiate Athletic Association opponent St. Mary's of the Woods. Hazleton failed to get the bats going against excellent pitching from the Pomeroys, losing by the score of 7-0.
The Pomeroy pitching combined for a 2-hit shutout as they silenced Hazleton batters who combined to score 33 runs earlier in the day. St. Mary's picked up an early lead in the first off a single by Brooke Jordan, but the game remained up for grabs through five innings. After scoring 2 runs in the third, St. Mary's sealed the victory with four runs on a string of four hits in the sixth inning pushing the lead out to 7-0 Despite keeping the game close, the Lions failed to to threaten a score on offense falling 7-0 in defeat.
Kayla Karchner pitched well through 5 innings, giving up just three runs, but ran out of gas in the sixth leading to 4 late insurance runs for St. Mary's. Karchner finished the day giving up 11 hits in 6 innings of work, four earned runs and two strikeouts. Andrea Quillman extended her hit streak streak to three games in the losing effort.
Marlee Yeager led the Pomeroy offense with 2 doubles in 4 trips to the plate including 2 runs scored and 2 RBI. Brooke Jordon, Jacklyn McClain and Sarah Burnham tossed a combined shut-out, surrendering just two hits and fanning 10 Hazleton batters to garner the win.
Next Up: A day off for the Lady Lions on Tuesday, and then back out on the field for afternoon softball on Wednesday as Hazleton takes on Waynesburg University in a double-header matchup.
